Kawasaki Heavy Industries - Press Release - Test of Japan's first Hydrogen-fueld Aircraft Engine

On October 8th, 2026, our colleagues from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced the successful completion of Japan’s first operational test of a small aircraft engine equipped with a newly developed hydrogen combustor, achieving some of the lowest nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the world. The test was conducted at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Noshiro Rocket Testing Center in Akita Prefecture. This sucessful test campaign is an outstanding achievement and a huge contribution towards a sustainable future in aircraft propulsion. B&B-AGEMA is honored to be a part of this journey by supporting Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. in the development of the MicroMix combustion technology for this aircraft engine application [Ref. ASME-paper GT2026-176368].

Am Donnerstag um 14:15 Uhr ist es so weit: Unser Kollege steht auf der Bühne der STC Germany! In seinem Vortrag dreht sich alles um ein kritisches Thema der erneuerbaren Energien: „Thermo-mechanical whole engine-model co-simulation of a concentrated solar power steam turbine“.

Worum geht es?
Solarthermische Kraftwerke (CSP) sind ein Schlüssel für die saubere Stromversorgung, verlangen Dampfturbinen durch ständige Lastwechsel und extreme Temperaturschwankungen jedoch alles ab. Um diese Belastungen zu beherrschen, reicht der Blick auf Einzelteile nicht mehr aus.
Er zeigt live, wie wir durch eine ganzheitliche Thermo-mechanische Co-Simulation die Strömungs- und Strukturmechanik der gesamten Maschine koppeln. Das Ergebnis? Höhere Präzision, optimierte Lebensdauer und maximale Flexibilität für die Netze von morgen.

Hydrogen combustion technologies are crucial for achieving CO2-free gas turbines and aero engines. At the Gas Turbine Symposium 2026 (GTS 2026), taking place from August 26–28 at Sono Calm in Yeosu, Korea, our partner UIT Inc. will deliver a presentation on behalf of B&B-AGEMA dedicated to this vital topic.

The presentation, titled "Micro-Mix Hydrogen Combustors: From Industrial Gas Turbines to Aero Engines" will provide a comprehensive overview of the working principles of Micro-Mix combustors. Additionally, it will address the complex CFD and combustion simulation challenges encountered during research and development for real-world engine applications."

ISAIF 16, Prague

From September 15th to 18th, B&B-AGEMA will participate in the 16th edition of The International Symposium on Experimental and Computational Aerothermodynamics of Internal Flows   in Prague, Czech Republic. We will inform about the collaborative developement(with Kawasaki Heavy Industries of an infrared borescope for real-time assessment of film-cooling performance on the shroud platform of a first stage gas turbine guide vane. 26th Conference of the International Society for Air Breathing Engines (ISABE) – Toulouse, France – 22.09 – 27.09.2024

For the Blue Condor project, a research initiative on contrail formation led by Airbus Operations France SAS, B&B-AGEMA developed a turbojet engine combustion chamber capable of 100% hydrogen combustion. The project results including the first Blue Condor flight tests were presented in a paper at this year’s ISABE conference in Toulouse.
