The cooling tower performance is evaluated by the knowledge of the cold water temperature at a constant cooling range. An accurate calculation of this key parameter is provided by accurate modeling of the heat exchange between the cooling water and the air inside the cooling tower. Highest accuracy is achieved by consideration of the 3D air flow, buoyancy effects the influence of flue gas injection and the influence of side wind. B&B-AGEMA has developed and validated special models that consider the mentioned effects and can be linked to a CFD code. Especially for wet cooling towers customized models have been implemented, where the evaporation process is taken into account and where different cooling water zones, e.g. spray zone, cooling fills and rain zone, can be modeled with highest accuracy.
